Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
